How to Calculate Carbon Footprint
A carbon footprint estimate combines what you do with emissions factors that approximate the climate impact of each activity.
The basic formula
Most personal carbon calculators use the same core structure: activity data multiplied by an emissions factor. For example, monthly electricity use is multiplied by a grid-emissions factor, and driving distance is multiplied by a vehicle-emissions assumption.

Home energy: electricity and heating impact depends on your consumption and your local grid or fuel source.
Transport: vehicle efficiency, distance, fuel type, and shared trips can change the result significantly.
Flights: aviation impact depends on distance, cabin class, routing, and how many round trips you take.
Diet and waste: food choices and waste handling are usually modeled with broader lifestyle factors, so they are best treated as directional estimates.
